Two shipments of minibus-taxis that arrived in South Africa from China is part of an ongoing effort to renew South Africa’s ageing minibus-taxi fleet. With over 15 million South Africans making use of minibus taxis to get to and from work every day, it is crucial for the country’s economy to have an efficient public transport system. Investment in this sector is essential to support economic growth.
These vehicles, imported from three different manufacturers in China, are part of a steady stream of about 250 vehicles that are imported on a monthly basis, and will arrive in two batches in containers of 20 vehicles and 30 vehicles respectively. A third shipment of 150 vehicles will be arriving through Transnet’s ride-on-ride-off facilities.
